June-2007

From The President – Bob Miller

We completed our Spring 07 rally last week and it was a great one. Thanks to Bob and Marlys Drewes for the outstanding job as lead wagon masters with help from Jim and Anita White, Martin Luebke and Darwin and Marlene Kreun. We tried a mid-week rally for the first time and it was a success with twenty-five coaches in attendance---including 2 SOB’s. We started with the usual first night pot luck followed by a next morning business meeting and tech session.  In the afternoon we were treated to a tour of EROS which is a government run complex in the South Dakota countryside and employs some six hundred people who use various methods of recording data regarding world wide waters, land mass, and atmosphere to track changes, predict future needs, etc. Their main source is satellite photography which yields some incredible pictures. We all traveled together in a bus that Bob was able to get at no cost to us---still don’t know how he did that. It was an exceptional tour enjoyed by everyone. Wednesday evening we were treated to a super catered meal, arranged by Martin Luebke. By the time we left the winds had picked up and storm warnings had been issued. The storms never materialized so most of us slept through the night. The next morning we enjoyed a “breakfast in a bag” meal hosted by the Whites.  Most of the members started for home after that, although several couples stayed another night and took in the sights at Sioux Falls. We had several new members and prospects in attendance so it was good to see our club continue to gain in interest and membership.

At the business meeting we took an informal survey of how many people liked the mid-week rally format and found that the majority did. If we switch to mid week it will be much easier to get good campgrounds at more reasonable rates so I think we need to consider mid-week rallies for next year. Let me know what you think about doing that. We talked about adding an extra day to the rally’s to have time to socialize and just relax and everyone seemed in favor of that as well. Many now are coming a day early so I think we should try to incorporate this by showing up a day early at the next rally and officially switch to a two day plus format next year. The remaining two rally’s this year are July 27th, 28th,and 29th at the Buffalo House Campground near Duluth and the Fall rally will be during the International rally September 16th through the 22nd  at the Amana Colony in Iowa.

We have been contacted by GMC International to help out during their rally in September since it is in our membership area. We have done this several times in the past and I think we should do it again. We need to know is who is going to attend and if they are able to help out. Bob Drewes has volunteered to be our point person on this project so I would like to ask you to do the following: Please contact Bob and let him know (1) Are you planning on going to the International Fall Rally at Amana; (2) would you be willing to help out and  (3) do you have any restrictions such as needing to work at a desk or table vs. something like helping with parking, etc. Contact Bob by e-mail at bmdrewes@iw.net, or by phone at 605-997-2550. Please try to do this within a week of   receiving this letter.

As a final note, I finished installing my 500 Caddy motor at 10:00pm the night before I left for South Dakota and outside of a few adjustments, it ran great. Nothing like getting finished at the last possible moment to raise your stress level.  Remember, together we can make sure our club is fun, social, and informative about our wonderful GMC’s.    Continue to have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you at the next rally near Duluth, Minnesota.

We would like to thank you so much for the flowers that were sent
by the club to Mom's service. They were beautiful and lasted a very long
time. To all who thought of her these past weeks, we thank you so much. She
always looked forward to going to the rallies, to seeing new and old places,
but she especially looked forward to seeing her friends. She was truly
blessed with so many. Thank you again for all the thoughts, prayers, cards
and the wonderful flowers. Rick and Roxy Berqual
