From The President – Howard “Howie” Glenna
Greetings to all the Greater Midwest Classics members. The Summer Rally will be held in the “air conditioned city” as Duluth, Minnesota claims to be air conditioned by nature. I suspect being next to Lake Superior might have something to do with it. We are returning to a great campground and restaurant combination, the Buffalo House Campground with Rally dates of July 29-31st and early arrivals on the 28th.
Bob and Yvonne Miller with help from Jim and Teresa Dall will be our wagon masters. This promises to be a fun rally. Bob is not only our Past President but, Bob and Yvonne were two of the original founders of the Greater Midwest Classics. Having them team up with the energy and help of Duluth area residents Jim and Teresa, it has to be good. I look forward to seeing you all in July. To my aviation friends I apologize for the rally falling on part of the Oshkosh time slot.
The Spring Rally at Kiesler’s in Waseca was a great opportunity to get caught up with old friends and with our new members. We had 28 coaches in attendance, and 54 members at our Saturday dinner. We had a couple of nice evenings around the fire with excellent music. Kiesler’s is a very nice campground with many mature trees.
One technical note: If you have not replaced your brake hoses recently, especially the front ones, it might be a good idea. We are seeing a number of collapsed interior walls on the hoses and this is causing the brakes to drag and not release properly. This can cause excessive heat to build-up particularly in the front hubs. The hoses look good from the outside. One hose I recently replaced when it was off the coach 175 psi could not blow air through it.
As an added note, I have changed providers for email in an effort to improve my web access and have a new email address: email@example.com (So far I’ve not found it to be much better).
From Vice President – Lucy Weidner
Greetings to everyone! Our Waseca Rally was very successful with great weather and one of the record attendances that provided us with lots of time to “BS” (Bonding and Sharing). Kudos to a great committee: Howard & Midge Glenna, Sandi Renk and the Weidner’s As you can see in this Newsletter, our First Past President’s Rally has been arranged by Bob & Yvonne Miller with help from Jim & Teresa Dall. Looks like it will be another good one with time for talking and sight seeing.
The Fall Rally - Sept. 20-23 is still scheduled for Menomonie and if you want to visit the campground website it is: www.menomoniecamping.com
We’re still looking for a Christmas party site and if we don’t have one by the Fall rally, we’ll not be having one this year and we’ll look to 2010.
I thought it might help to know a little bit about what’s involved in hosting a rally so I’ve included some items from the Wagonmaster Checklist:
1. Look in your area for a campsite that may accommodate our group.
2. Visit with campground manager to determine: group rate, deadline date for reservations, grill on site, hook ups, restrooms, an enclosed shelter, local attractions and events.
3. Shelter needs to be enclosed, have water for coffee and clean up, and is heated or air- conditioned as appropriate. Can accommodate group for meetings, pot-luck, and fun activities.
4. Determine if the shelter is available for a dinner on Saturday night. If so, arrange for a catered dinner, if that’s what you want. Otherwise locate a local restaurant for a rally dinner. It’s easier to order off the menu if possible, otherwise arrange for a buffet with one set price.
5. Decide the schedule for Saturday. Are you going to have a technical session? Something for the women? Or will a tour be arranged for the group?
6. Will you have an evening activity for Saturday evening? Bingo? Ice Cream Social? Your choice.
7. Put rally information together and send to Newsletter Editor, Jane Hasek.
8. Rally supplies will be provided by previous Rally hosts.
There are other items to share and if you have questions, just call me at 715-235-422 or email me at WeidnerL@wwt.net Hosting a Christmas party (rally) is entirely different, you just need to pick a date, find a restaurant, and let someone know the plan! Please seriously consider hosting a rally in the future, you will not do it alone, there are plenty of willing hands.
That about sums things up. Loving the flowers coming up and sitting on our screen porch with a good book. Hope you are all getting some R & R at home and hope to see you in Duluth. Lucy (and Larry 2).

2009 GMC RALLY SCHEDULE
Summer Rally – July 29-31, Duluth, MN
Fall Rally – September 20-23, Menomonie, WI
Fall GMCMI Rally – September 27 – October 2, Pueblo, CO
RECIPE REQUEST (from Summer Rally)
EASY RASPBERRY TRIFLE
1- Angel Food Cake (you can make your own or buy one already made)
1- 8 oz. Pkg of sugar free Raspberry Gelatin
1- 10 oz. Pkg of frozen Raspberries
2-3 6 oz. Containers of Yoplait 97% Fat Free Raspberry Yogurt (I use at least 4-5 for this full recipe)
Pour 2 cups of boiling water over gelatin. Stir until dissolved. Add THAWED raspberries (save some for garnish if desired) Refrigerate gelatin mixture until it starts to thicken, but not set. Tear angel food cake into ¼” pieces. Place half of the cake in a bowl (you can use a glass bowl to make it special). Place a layer of the gelatin mixture over the cake. Place a layer of the yogurt over the mixture (I put the yogurt in a bowl to make it easier for layering). Repeat layers and garnish with leftover raspberries if desired. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours until firm. Cover and refrigerate any leftovers (usually there aren’t any!)
Makes 16 servings. For our potluck, I cut the recipe in half. ENJOY, Lucy Weidner
